Family Fun Night is a tradition we started where we come together one night a week to have fun, spend time together and connect.
As our kids get older I wanted to start a tradition where a couple of times a month and on a weekend night, we had a family only fun night to look forward to. This tradition will most likely change over time as the boys grow and their interests change. Right now our fun night consists of having pizza and a family discussion during dinner. Followed by building your own ice cream sundae with an assortment of toppings. Then, enjoying dessert while watching a movie. And lastly, having a dance party to selections of music chosen by all of us.
During dinner, we had our first family discussion. We decided it would be good to go over our Family Core Values:
- Honesty: When in doubt tell the truth
- Kindness: To yourself, family, elders, peers and to people less fortunate
- Respect: Manners, tone of voice and obeying the rules
- Communication: Talk about our feelings, express what’s wrong, ask questions when unsure
- Hard Work: Follow-through, integrity, do your best
We’ve chosen a variety of classic and contemporary movies. I love to show classic movies, my mom always did this for us and I’ve always enjoyed seeing the old as well as the new movies.
Some movies we have seen on Family Fun Night Are:
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Goonies
- Little Mermaid
- E.T.
- Mary Poppins
- Toy Story
- Home Alone
- The SandLot
- Charlotte’s Web
- Pets
- Zootopia
- Spy Kids
- Peter Rabbit
- Mrs.Doubtfire
- Big
- Wreck-It-Ralph
- Aladin
- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
- Holes
- The Lego Movie
- Small Foot
- Bolt
- Abominable
The dance party is done with the help of Alexa of course. My youngest Tyler especially likes dancing around with a flashlight and making images on the walls with the light. He’s also a fan of Christmas music so usually, we start off with Jingle Bells by The Chipmunks followed by lots of current music requests from Luke. Jason and I get in 1 or 2 songs that we love too! And oddly enough they calm down for bed after getting their wiggles out and after reading a story.
Memories like these I hope they stay with us forever! I also hope that my boys will look back on these family nights with joy and an appreciation for quality family time. What are some of your family traditions in your home?
